Intelligent and courageous, Akitas are very protective and make excellent watch dogs. They are friendly and affectionate, but need to be carefully trained to avoid stubbornness. They thrive on companionship. They are suited to suburban or apartment living if sufficiently exercised.

The national dog of Japan, the Akita was first used as an imperial guard dog.

  

Large Breed. Weight: 75-100 lbs. Height at the shoulders: 24-28 in.


Akitas need a lot of exercise.

A straight, coarse double-coat requires regular grooming. Seasonally heavy shedders.

Will do well with children only if raised with them from puppyhood.

Not generally trustworthy with other pets.

 
Gastric torsion, hip dysplasia, and eye problems.
