Charming, upbeat, and intelligent, Beagles make great family pets. They are friendly and gentle, suited to country or suburb living. They are generally loyal, but independent, too—when they’re “on scent” they’ll block out everything else.

Originating in England, the Beagle was bred for the hunting—it still follows its nose wherever it goes.

Beagles need a lot of daily exercise, preferably in a fenced-in yard.

A short, hard coat requires minimal brushing. Average shedders.

Glaucoma, epilepsy, inter-vertebral disc disease, and congenital heart disease.

Since Beagles are hunters and can often howl and yelp, they’re not great apartment dogs.
