Calm, steady, and docile, the Mastiff is a gentle giant. They are good-natured, excellent with children, and love to please their owners. Born guard-dogs, they are brave and loyal. They do well in most climates and can live in an apartment if sufficiently exercised.

The Mastiff was probably brought to Britain by Phoenician traders as early as the 6th century BC and was used as a guardian, fighter, and companion. A Mastiff came to America on the Mayflower.

Very Large Breed. Weight: 170-200 lbs. Height at the shoulders: Over 27.5 in.

The English Mastiff needs moderate exercise.

A double-coat requires little grooming. Average shedders.

Usually get along with other pets if raised with them from puppyhood.

Hip and elbow dysplasia, bloating, gastric torsion, cardiomyopathy, and ectropion.

Mastiffs need to be properly socialized as puppies and watch out for the tail.
