Fearless and friendly, the Norwegian Elkhound is a reliable, affectionate, and loyal family companion. They are great with children and make sensible guard dogs. They are known for their character-they're dignified, docile, and independent. They make excellent jogging companions and can do well in apartments if sufficiently exercised.

One of the most ancient breeds, a skeleton similar to the Elkhound's has been found dating from 4000-5000 BC. The Elkhound was used in Scandinavia as a hunter of big game.
Medium Breed. Weight: 48-55 lbs. Height at the shoulders: 19-21 in.
Elkhounds need a lot of exercise.
Thick double-coats require regular brushing. Seasonally heavy shedders.
Excellent with children.
Be cautious with non-canine pets.
Hip dysplasia, kidney disease, progressive retinal atrophy, and pyotraumatic dermatitis.
Elkhounds should not be overfed because they can gain weight quickly.
